It is super thrilling to see the pre-preview of the new CommunityRule live! As requested, here are some things I'm noticing, mostly quite tiny. I'm just tossing them in here in the order that I'm noticing them.

Homepage menu hover colors

Hover hinders visibility on mainpage, but not everywhere else:

"Trusted by leading collaborators"

First, this header feels off-center—not because it is, but because the logos below are spread out in a way that messes up the centering. I can imagine a few potential remedies, but I found it immediately distracting.

Second, I don't think we can yet claim that this is "trusted" by these organizations yet. I'd recommend removing this until we can get some clearer agreements.

Social links

Blog bylines

Blog posts have "Author name" as the bylines. Maybe use a generic one like "CommunityRule"? Or maybe we don't need bylines since I assume all our posts will just come from the same organizational voice?

"Worker's coop"

This is the first organization type listed in the authoring flow.

I know this has been a longstanding usage on the redesign, but it's not really normal (or even grammatical, since there is no such thing as a co-op with only one worker, as the placement of the apostrophe suggests). The more common way to render this (following the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives) would be "worker cooperative" or "worker co-op."

Organization type entry

I can't include spaces when adding a custom organization type, even though the default options include spaces.

Magic link UX

I think avoid exclamation marks. Something like moving from:

Check your email to log in!
Your account is created, now just check your email for a magic link

to:

Check your email to log in
Your account has been created. A login link has been emailed to you.

Oh, and I didn't get an email:)

Instead, the git link should go to this repo once it is live. * Bluesky should be: https://bsky.app/profile/medlabboulder.bsky.social * Could also add Mastodon? https://bsky.app/profile/medlabboulder.bsky.social ## Blog bylines Blog posts have "Author name" as the bylines. Okay, here's another round of notes!

  • In the footer, the left side is left-justified, but the right side items are centered (use cases, learn, about)
  • Below that, it says "All right reserved" "rights"? I'd also be up for a Creative Commons license like the current site.
  • Under "We've got your back..." on the main page, the "Learn more" button just goes up to the top. And the buttons below ("Decision-making support," etc.) don't go anywhere.
  • Several of the buttons seem more aggressive in rollover than they need to be. For instance the "Send me the magic link" button on the log in screen and the "Learn how CommunityRule works" both not only change colors but increase the size of the text in the button. That seems excessive.
  • On the About page, at the top there are a bunch of statistics about open source projects and mutual aid groups. That makes it look like we're claiming responsibility for those I think we should delete that stuff. Instead, we should have more straightforward material about who is behind this project; otherwise, it could look like we're evading responsibility. Could you replace that with materials that is more like (but perhaps shorter than) the current communityrule.info/about page? And update it to include credits to you guys? The current text below those boxes seems more like general rhetoric than information about the site.
  • Also on the About page, there is a link to the book. But the cover is for what I think is Dani's book, and the link takes you to the old book. I think we should have links to both of them. They should also be accessible from the Learn page.
  • The "Guide to CommunityRule" (/how-it-works) isn't accessible from the Learn page, which seems wrong.
  • I'm testing with a half-width screen, because my screen is divided between git and the site. The top header text gets really, really small at this width, so it is hard to see and click on the "use cases", "learn", "about" options.
  • What is the logic of the CU icon in "create rule" in the top right? I'm confused by what that means or implies. I'd maybe just put a plus symbol there.

In the authorship flow:

  • I tried the "use without changes" option under one of the templates. It still asked me for information about the size and nature of my group. Most of the way through the process, at the stage of "do other stakeholders need to be involved..." there is a popup that says "Congratulations! You've drafted your CommunityRule!" But I don't see it. From all I can tell I'm still in the authorship dialogue, even though I asked to just start with the template and no changes. the expected behavior from the "without changes" option should be to have a complete rule immediately, which users can then later start customizing. I think it's important for users to be able to short-circuit the authorship process if they want to get straight to a rule. (I recommend making the add-stakeholders option something you do after you see your rule. I suspect users will be reluctant to share their rule with comrades before they've actually seen it.)
  • After going through the above process, I clicked "finalize my communityRule" and got another "Log in" screen. I don't want to log in. Please enable users to avoid logging in indefinitely if they don't want to; I'd recommend adding a "proceed without logging in button." In lieu of that, I clicked the three-button menu at the top-right of the dialogue, expecting some options to appear. But instead the dialogue disappears and I get sent back to the previous screen.
  • In the "Review your CommunityRule" section, I can't edit the content of the modules. this seems like a good moment to be able to do that. An X icon takes over my mouse there. here I noticed I can "customize" by pressing the three-dot menu, but that seems hard to find. Editing should be the default, or else there should be a very obvious "Customize" or "Edit" button.
  • Maybe instead of "Finalize CommunityRule" it should be "Save your rule". We don't want to give the impression it can't be changed.

Content-wise, some bigger questions:

  • I'm still not sure we have capacity fro the "Ask an oragnizer" box. Is that going to Dani?
  • I'm honestly pretty ambivalent about the current Learn page. The design is beautiful! But the articles feel pretty AI-written and general, not really something someone would "learn" from. I also think they're a bit too political, like in talking about capitalism and neoliberalism; I don't really disagree with it, but it seems like it could potentially limit our user base. And the promise of a "brief guide" doesn't really offer much guidance; the offer of "practical steps" doesn't really have steps. I would love to see articles here that actually help users use the platform, describing specific ways in which different choices have consequences. Again, on the old site, our "guides" were actually practical guides to using the site: https://communityrule.info/guides/ Could we meet in the middle? I could imagine even AI improvements with a bit more prompting and context about the site.
