title: Imbizo Community Assembly
description: >-
A Southern African community assembly rooted in the philosophy of ubuntu
("I am because we are"), where community members gather to deliberate
matters of shared concern. Found across Nguni and other Southern African
societies, the imbizo is a forum for collective discussion and decision.

steps:
- headline: Call the imbizo
description: >-
A senior member or chief calls the imbizo, announcing the matter and
inviting all adult community members to attend.
- headline: Open with ubuntu
description: >-
The convenor opens by affirming ubuntu — that the community is bound
together and that each person's dignity is tied to the others'.
- headline: Deliberate together
description: >-
Members speak in turn, with elders and those most affected given
particular attention. The convener seeks the points of agreement
that all can accept.
- headline: Decide collectively
description: >-
The decision is reached collectively, framed as the community's will
rather than the chief's. Dissent is acknowledged and recorded.
- headline: Bind the community
description: >-
The decision is pronounced in a way that affirms the ongoing
relationship of the community, even where some disagreed.
outcome: >-
A decision is made that carries the community's collective weight,
grounded in the recognition that each person belongs to the others.
practice: >-
Ubuntu is not a slogan but the premise — that no decision stands apart
from relationship. If the imbizo becomes a chief's pronouncement, the
form is broken. |
