title: Zulu Imbizo Royal Assembly
description: >-
A Zulu practice in which a king or senior chief calls an imbizo — a
gathering of all men of the nation or region — to hear matters and
receive instruction. Distinguished from the smaller indaba, the imbizo
is a mass assembly for matters of national importance.

steps:
- headline: Call the imbizo
description: >-
The king or chief calls the imbizo, with the call going out through
the regions. All men of the affected area are expected to attend.
- headline: Gather at the royal grounds
description: >-
The men gather at the royal grounds, seated by regiment and region.
The king or his representative opens the proceedings.
- headline: Present the matter
description: >-
The matter — a threat, a policy, a celebration — is presented. Those
gathered may speak, with senior men and regiment leaders heard first.
- headline: The king pronounces
description: >-
The king or his representative pronounces the decision or position,
framed as the will of the nation gathered. The assembly affirms by
presence and ululation.
outcome: >-
A matter of national importance is addressed with the whole community
present, giving the decision the weight of the assembled nation.
practice: >-
The imbizo is distinct from the indaba — it is a mass assembly, not a
leaders' discussion. The king's pronouncement carries the legitimacy of
the gathering; without the gathering, it would not.
